Ghost gear refers to any fishing equipment or fishing-related litter that has been abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded; also referred to as ‘derelict fishing gear’ and/or ‘fishing litter’.

To combat ghost gear the Best Practices and Inform Policies working group, in conjunction with Poseidon Aquatic Resource Management Ltd, developed the Best Practice Framework for the Management of Fishing Gear (BPF).

The BPF provides all fishery stakeholders, from fishermen to port operators, with practical guidance to decrease the abundance and effects of ghost gear within their respective industries.

The BPF went through extensive consultation with external stakeholders to collect feedback on the framework. A report documenting the process and results is included below along with the BPF documents and summary fact sheets.
