Call for Government Support on Ghost Gear at Our Ocean Conference

To Coincide with the 2017 Our Ocean conference in Malta, World Animal Protection has posted a new blog entry on the dangers of ghost gear encouraging the world's governments to unite on this issue. The Global Ghost Gear Inititive had already taken the lead in this regard, having secured signed Statements of Support for the GGGI by 11 governements: Belgium, Dominican Republic, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Palau, Panama, Samoa, Sweden, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Today at the Our Ocean Conference, this number grew to 12 with the extremely exciting news that the United Kingdom has signed the Statement of Support for the GGGI. It is our hope that the example set by these 12 governments, and their commitments to the UN Sustainability Development Goals, specifically SDG 14, will encourage others to follow suit and help address the problem of lost and abandoned fishing gear worldwide.
