The Global Ghost Gear Initiative is pleased to announce the completion of "Methods to Locate Derelict Fishing Gear in Marine Waters" - the first in a series of guidance documents designed to assist those wishing to participate in ghost gear related projects.
This particular document, written by Joan Drinkwin of Natural Resource Consultants, contains a general overview of the methodologies used globally to locate lost, abandoned and discarded fishing gear in the marine environment. It describes a number of different methods used to locate lost gear, outlines the benefits and limitations of each method, and provides contact information for individuals / organizations experienced in the methods described.
The document also contains a selection of case studies and examples for each method and suggests contacts for further information.
The GGGI hopes to put out several of these guidance documents in the near future, and will have a dedicated documents section on the GGGI website to house them as they are produced.
