GGGI Small Grant - (2024) - Local Independent Sea Anglers (UK)
Project Summary
The Angler’s National Line Recycling Scheme (ANLRS) has expanded on its success of past years, recycling more than 125 million meters of monofilament angling line and more than 100,000 single use plastic items generated from recreational angling in the UK. With funding from its 2024 small grant, ANLRS plans to expand its footprint into three new areas by recovering lost gear, collecting data and information on the source of the gear, sending recovered material for recycling, and implementing an awareness campaign to encourage participation from local fishing communities.
Funding for 2024 allowed for the installation of four additional pipe bins to recycle recreational fishing materials, with there now being a total of 42 pipe bin locations on the Sussex Coast. ANLRS also recovered and recycled one tonne of ALDFG and three tonnes of end-of-life gear, including 172 kg of HDPE Net, 2.1 tonnes of monofilament gillnet, 1.75 tonnes of rope, and eight lobster and 19 whelk/crab pots, with the pots weighing weighing 118 kg. Additionally, ANLRS recovered and recycled one tonne of commercial fishing-related plastics (buoys, floats and other plastic litter). The total of 5.1 tonnes exceeded the project expectations. The cost for the recovery of this material also exceeded the budget, with ANLRS and REAP UK covering the additional costs.
